Microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure which uses a variety of sizes of micro needles at differing depths. The procedure can help reduce the appearance of skin concerns such as acne scars, stretch marks or wrinkles and general skin tightening.

The Science behind Microneedling

Micro-punctures are created using microneedles which produce a controlled skin injury, they do this without damaging the epidermis. This controlled skin injury causes minimal superficial bleeding and results in a wound healing cascade, several  growth factors are activated following the micro injury of the skin, such as platelet derived growth factor, connective tissue activating protein, tissue growth factor and fibroblast growth factor.

The process of microneedling also breaks down old hardened scar tissue and allows it to revascularize, thus softening the scar. Neovascularization and neocollagenesis occur due to the migration and proliferation of fibroblasts and the formation of the intercellular matrix.  A fibrinogen matrix forms 5 days following treatment after which stimulates the production of collagen resulting in skin tightening.  Research has shown that skin treated with 3 microneedling sessions 4 weeks apart has a significant increase in collagen and elastin production which improvements in the skin integrity shown up to a year post treatment.

What is it used for ?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure for your skin, in which thin needles are used to make tiny holes in the top layer of your skin. The damage helps stimulate your skin’s natural healing process, as a result of the controlled trauma to the skin it produces more collagen and elastin. These are proteins which keep your skin firm and smooth.

Most people get microneedling on their face, but you can also get it on your legs, back, neck or other areas where you notice damaged, wrinkled and aging skin. A course of 3 treatments is recommended to achieve your desired results. Top up treatments can help maintain the results at 3-6 or 12 month intervals. Some choose to continue the monthly treatments as the continue to see noticeable results for the treatment.

How does it work ?

Microneedling is done by using a small handheld device to create hundreds of microscopic needle holes in the skin on the face and or body. The face is numbed using topical anesthetic for maximum comfort. As the treatment pen is moved over the face, it creates micro injuries and prompts the dermis, a deeper layer of skin, to mount a healing response, delivering a natural collagen boost. The tiny channels in the skin made by the needles also allows for deeper absorption of topical treatments after treatment

Microneedling can help improve the appearance and texture of your skin. It can minimize stretch marks, scars, wrinkles and other skin concerns.

It doesn’t carry the risk of skin discoloration, unlike some facial rejuvenation procedures that use heat, light or lasers. This makes microneedling  the perfect skin tightening treatment for those with darker skin tones

What are the Benefits ?

Microneedling has proven effective for use for wide variety of skin and hair complaints . Some of the areas microneedling is effective for include.

  • Enlarged pores.

  • Fine lines or wrinkles.

  • Loose or crepey (thin and wrinkled) skin.

  • Mild scars, especially those from acne or burns.

  • Skin discoloration or uneven skin tone.

  • Stretch marks.

The procedure can also help people who have medical conditions such as:

  • Alopecia areata (hair loss).

  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
