Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a skin-resurfacing procedure that uses a diamond tip and suction device to remove the outer layer of skin. The skin that grows back is usually smoother.

The Science behind Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion causes a superficial injury to the papillary dermis, which heals by re-epithelialization from adnexal structures in the reticular dermis. This healing process results in a smoother surface. This phenomenon occurs because of the deposition of new collagen within the dermis of the treated area.

What is it used for ?

Dermabrasion can be used to treat or remove:

  • Scars caused by acne, surgery or injuries

  • Fine wrinkles, especially those around the mouth

  • Sun-damaged skin, including age spots

  • Tattoos

  • Swelling and redness of the nose (rhinophyma)

  • Potentially precancerous skin patches

How does it work ?

Dermabrasion is done with a specially designed tool that simultaneously sloughs off dead cells whilst suctioning them away from the skin.  It’s typically used on the face, particularly close to the eyes due to its precision can decrease the appearance of fine facial lines and improve the look of many skin flaws, including acne scars, scars from surgery, age spots and wrinkles.

What are the Benefits ?

After microdermabrasion, your skin will feel very smooth and there should be less variance in pigmentation. Microdermabrasion can also stimulate the production of collagen, aiding elasticity and the appearance of wrinkles.

scarring, such as from acne or stretch marks, should be less obvious. Dead skin cells will be removed and your skin will simply feel cleaner than ever. The circulation in your skin will be improved, ensuring that all necessary nutrients and oxygen have a clear pathway to rejuvenate the area.

Your skin will be more able to absorb your chosen skincare products. For those who are treating skin conditions such as acne, this can be particularly important as their skincare products are effectively more useful. Microdermabrasion can also reduce the size of the pores by unclogging them and improving circulation.

Microdermabrasion is a safe procedure, it’s not as harsh or risky as procedures such as chemical peels or laser treatment, yet you still get the benefit of great results. The recovery time is not very long and usually only takes a few hours.

You may be wondering whether microdermabrasion can reduce acne scars. The answer is that it depends on the nature and depth of the scarring. Shallow depressed acne scars should see an improvement. If the scarring is deeper, sometimes described as an ice pick scar, then you may need treatment with microneedling too .
